| Aspen
offers world-class skiing where anyone will feel at ease with its
offering. Aspen is an attractive
Victorian town, situated at the foot of the Aspen Mountain (now known
as Ajax), boasts 200 shops and a variety of restaurants.
Although considerably larger than most other US ski
resorts, the town centre is compact with hotels on the outskirts being
served by an efficient bus service. Aspen includes 4 mountains in its
pass - Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass.
|
| Aspen has
the image of 'Hollywood on ice' and attracts big names such as Michael
Douglas and Jack Nicholson. Unfortunately, this also means big prices,
with day to day living in Aspen being more expensive than anywhere
else in Colorado. |
 |
|
Aspen offers some of the best skiing in North America whatever your
skill. However, the town's original fame came in the late 1870s from
silver mining. After its demise in 1893, the town struggled for 50
years before finding its place as a ski resort. Planners have managed
to conserve the older buildings, with more recent building built in a
sympathetic style to the surroundings. Ajax
opened to Snowboarders during the 2000-01 season. Snowmass is an
alternative base for cheaper accommodation. Aspen Highlands, opened in
2000-01 and rapidly expanding, offers more off-beat skiing and
snowboarding.
Aspen has its own airport and is served by flights
from Denver, Minneapolos and Phoenix, all of which must be booked in
advance. Alternatively, Eagle County Airport is 70 miles away. |
